The term #cabochon is often featured in #jewelry #design. A gem that is polished and not faceted cut is a cabochon. Historically prior to the 15th century invention of the faceted cut, all #gems were only available in cabochon cut. Cabochon can be in different shapes with a dome convex top and a flat bottom. This cut produces a beautiful soft lustre enhancing the natural quality of the gem. Cabochon made with colored glass with the addition of a foil backing are often used to create the illusion of precious gems.
