The word enamel originates from Latin meaning “glass”. Enamel is believed to originate in the 13th Century in Cypress. The earliest Chinese enamel artifacts were from the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) with the technique introduced from the west. Enamel in jewelry is a technique where powdered glass is fused into a metal substrate under a high temperature (between 750°C - 850 °C), which hardens to a beautiful, smooth, durable vitreous coating.
